The Malaysian butterflies gallery on this page show-cases only a few of the more than a thousand species of the beautiful butterflies of Malaysia.
I do hope to add more images to this gallery from time to time.
Well, butterflies are divided by the specialists into two superfamilies.
They are the Papilionoidea (the Butterflies Proper) and Hesperioidea (Skippers).
These are further sub-divided into families and sub-families.
The families are those with names ending with "idae", while the sub-families have names ending with "inae".
There are four families of the Butterflies Proper, ie., Papilionidae, Pieridae, Nymphalidae and Lycaenidae.
The Skippers have only one family known as Hesperiidae.
The families, as mentioned, have sub-families with many species, although some sub-families may not be found in the country.
Browse here for books, field and photographic guides on the butterflies of Malaysia.
This little gallery is just to show the beauty and range of the wonderful butterflies found in Malaysia. They are not arranged into any order of families, and I have listed their common names together with their scientific names.

And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the living creatures that He has scattered through them: and He has Power to gather them together when He wills. There is not an animal (that lives) on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but (forms part of) communities like you. And God has created every animal from water: of them there are some that creep on their bellies; some that walk on two legs; and some that walk on four. God creates what He wills for verily God has power over all things.
